KFC MERRIFIELD MILE 2020 CANCELLED
“After much careful consideration, the organisers of the KFC Merrifield Mile have decided regretfully to cancel the event for 2020 due to the very low levels of water in the Wriggleswade Dam. The organisers cannot be certain that there will be sufficient water in the dam in a month’s time given that water is still being released to supply communities where there is a desperate need in Butterworth in particular, as well as supplementing the Nahoon and Bridle Drift Dams. Clearly the Eastern Cape is experiencing a severe drought and the water shortage is dire. The release of water is crucial to servicing many communities experiencing critical water needs.
The organisers are of the opinion that the event will be compromised given these circumstances and need to make a timely call before carrying costs, as well as to let the public know in good time. We trust the public will be understanding of this notice given the current water scarcity. The organisers and sponsors remain committed to hosting the event in 2021 at a time when hopefully water in the Wriggleswade Dam and surrounding areas will once again be plentiful.”
